Driving in Nepal as a Tourist โ IDP (International Driving Permit) Guide for UAE & GCC Travellers
Can You Drive in Nepal on a Tourist Visa?
Many travellers from the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman ask whether they can rent a car or bike in Nepal. The short answer: carry your valid home licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP), and always confirm the current rules with your rental company or the Department of Transport Management before you drive. Rules and enforcement change, so treat this guide as a starting point.
What Is an IDP?
An International Driving Permit is a multi-language translation of your national driving licence. It is not a licence by itself โ you must carry both documents together. It is normally valid for one year and must be obtained in your home country before you travel.
How to Get an IDP in the UAE
- Apply through the authority that handles driving licences in your emirate, or through an authorised motoring club.
- Bring your Emirates ID, valid UAE driving licence and passport-size photos.
- Processing is usually quick, but apply at least 1โ2 weeks before your trip.
Residents of other GCC countries should ask their national traffic department or motoring club.
Driving Conditions in Nepal
- Traffic drives on the left.
- Mountain roads are narrow, steep and often unpaved; landslides are common in monsoon (JuneโSeptember).
- Traffic in Kathmandu is dense and chaotic for first-time visitors.
- Fuel stations are limited on remote routes.
Our Recommendation: Car With Driver
For most tourists the safest and most relaxing option is a private car with an experienced local driver. It usually costs USD 50โ90 per day depending on route and vehicle, includes fuel in many packages, and removes the stress of navigation, parking and mountain roads. Most Nepal tour packages on this site already include private transfers.
Motorbike Rentals
Bike rentals are common in Thamel and Lakeside Pokhara, but insurance often does not cover unlicensed riders and accidents can be costly. Check that your travel insurance covers motorcycling, wear a helmet and avoid night riding.
